RWC: Showing the world what NZ is all about…

Posted: September 13th, 2011 | Author: | Filed under: New Zealand | Tags: , , | No Comments »

The idea all along was to make New Zealand’s Rugby World Cup about a whole lot more than the game itself. And that’s why the country is using the event to showcase itself, its people and its produce and products to the world.

Call it “Brand New Zealand” — the push over RWC‘s 45 days covers everything from the feast of cultural, tourism and business-related events which come under the banner of the Real New Zealand Festival to the promotions being planned by individual companies across the nation themselves.

A Reserve Bank study released in August predicted the RWC would inject NZ$700 million (397 million euros) into the local economy from tourist spending alone as visitors take in all the host country has to offer. There are an estimated 90,000 of them planning to make it to New Zealand for at least some part of the action while viewing figures are expected to top the four billion who tuned in for at least some part of the last RWC in France in 2007.

In terms of viewing figures that puts the RWC up there with the likes of the Olympics and football’s World Cup but just how much of the goodwill leads to New Zealand products being snapped up by consumers overseas is a much harder proposition to pin down.

“You can’t really be sure what the effect will be other than to know that never before have so many New Zealand businesses been given an opportunity to get out there internationally,” says NZTE’s Rugby World Cup project director Bruce Gadd. “We are all aware that rugby involves a lot of business that is done between people in the crowd and away from the games and that’s why there are so many social opportunities being presented to them.”

Among the larger organizations hoping to use the opportunities presented by the RWC is New Zealand Winegrowers, which represents an industry that throws NZ$1.5 billion (851 million euros) into the economy each year thanks predominantly to the international sales of its sauvignon blanc and pinot noir.

“New Zealand’s two greatest assets are its tourism and its produce,” says NZ Winegrowers’ CEO Philip Gregan. “Wine plays a vital role in our economy and in our exports and it will play a large role at the Rugby World Cup. People will come here to eat and to drink as well as to watch the rugby and we all have to make use of that fact.”

So for those lucky enough to be heading down to New Zealand next month, you can expect to see more than just the rugby on show.

“I’m not really sure the full extent of the opportunity being presented to New Zealand has been realized until very recently,” says RNZ 2011 CEO Martin Snedden. “But it is building right now, which is the perfect time.”

Those hoping to use the event to shed more international light on their products certainly agree.
“Anyone, in any business across New Zealand not leveraging themselves to be part of this event is mad. Simple as that,” says Cliff Walsh, production manager at VnC Manufacturing.

Walsh’s company produces ready-to-pour VnC Cocktails, marketed now globally from their Tauranga-based and he says the RWC is providing a once-in-a-marketing-lifetime chance for New Zealand businesses to sell themselves to the world.

“New Zealand Trade and Enterprise are giving companies a chance to show what they can do, a platform for us to be involved in this event not matter where our businesses are based,” says Walsh.
